Administrative / biographical background

In 1881, Joseph Ansell, a maltster since 1857, and his sons began brewing at their Aston Cross brewery. In 1889 Ansells became a limited company with a share capital of £200,000 and by 1901 the company was worth £750,000. Over this period the brewery at Aston was gradually enlarged, and by amalgamating with, and acquiring other brewing companies the business grew steadily, and in 1934, with the acquisition of the Holt Brewery Company Limited, it became one of the largest brewing groups in the country. The Ansell family link to the company ceased in 1929, with the death of Edward Ansell at the age of 80. In 1961 Ansells joined with Ind Coope and Tetley Walker to form Allied Breweries, which became Allied Domecq, and is now called Punch Retail Ltd.
