Description

Consisting of five paper booklets bound in a parchment cover, foliated 1 - 214 (edited in 3 volumes by Harry W. Gidden for Southampton Record Society, 1927-1930)

I. fols. 1-39

(a) List of receipts to and payments from town treasury 21 January 1455 fol. 2 and part of 2v.

(b) List of arrears of revenue officials 29 January 1454/5. fols. 20-25r.

(c) List of annually elected officers responsible for revenues with note of year's total due from each. 1444/5 - 1452/3 in a single hand fols. 37r and part of 37v, 1453 - 1464 fols. 37v-38v.

The first two lists petered out after audit and the blank pages were used for various memoranda 1458-1543, and for memoranda entered consecutively 17 March 1500/1 - 16 February 1508-9.

II. fols 39-125

(a) continuation of list of annually elected officers 1464/5 - 1620; annual receipts not entered after 1468/9; names of two constables added after 1552/3, names of keepers of keys of the coffers "where the charter lyethe" and "in the towne hall wher as the seall ys" from 1554/5, no keepers of keys for the town hall coffer are appointed after 1557/8; names of 12 assistants from 1574/5-1580/1 and for 1582/3; names of undersheriffs from 1584/5, also note on election of mayor by ballot 1597/8; fols. 39-84r and 90-102v, there are no fols. between 90v and 100r. Part of an earlier foliation survives from fol. 88r-107 foliated as 48-50, 53-57.

(b) Note of costs in the exchequer, 1549/1550 fol. 85r fols. 85v-86r blank.

(c) Various memoranda concerning the porters and town officers 1521, 1545-7, 1552 fols. 86v-88v. Folio 89a & b in Gidden "The Book of Remembrance 1440-1620" Vol. I pp. 114-115 is in fact folio 183r.

(d) Account of money received from grazing on the Saltmarsh 1519-20 fol. 104 r [fol. 103 is blank]

(e) List of arrears on town accounts, beginning 1509/10 fols. 104v-107r.

(f) Various memoranda 1509, 1517 fol. 107r and v.

(g) Tables of measures of plain and dyed woollen cloths, wool, wool fells and leather with custom to be charged upon aliens and inhabitants, n.d. c.1470. fols. 108-112r original foliation 1-5r. section numbers "ij, iij, iiij" at bottom right hand corner.

(h) Copy of agreement between Southampton and Salisbury concerning petty customs 25 July 1329 [See also Oak Book SC 2/1/1 pp. 23-24 and SC 3/ ] n.d. similar hand to (g) above, fols. 112v-113r. original foliation 5v-6r.

(i) Copy of grant of share in waterworks by the Friars Minor to the town 2 February 1310/11. n.d. similar hand to (g) above, fol. 113v original foliation 6v.

(j) Copy of grant of waterworks by the Friars Minor to the town 3 October 1420 [See also SC4/2/238] n.d. in similar hand to (g) above, fols. 114r-115r original foliation 7r-8r.

(k) Copy of agreement between the town and the Priory of St. Denys concerning the profits of the court leet or view of frankpledge held at the Cutthorn, 6 May 1397 [see also SC4/2/166] n.d. similar hand to (g) above fols. 115v-116r. original foliation 8v-9r.

(l) Copy of letters patent of Henry IV exemplifying a Writ or Richard II to the Exchequer and the Exchequer certificate in reply [1391] concerning customs on salt, fish, pitch, tar, ashes and Eastland boards at Southampton, Sandwich and Winchelsea giving names of merchants bringing these goods and details of exemptions from customs at all three ports, 24 January 1407/8 [see also SC1/1/ ] n.d. in hand similar to (g) above, fols. 116r-118r. original foliation 9r-11r, section numbers vj vij viij at bottom right hand corner.

(m) Copy of part of a writ from Henry Prince of Wales to Mayor and bailiffs of the Cinque Ports concerning complaints by foreigners of the seizure of property in England. n.d. c.1400 in similar hand to (g) above, fol. 118r, original foliation 11r.

(n) Copy of proceedings in Chancery in a dispute between Henry Dorst, hanse merchant and the Mayor bailiffs and burgesses of Southampton 4 November, 1410-7 February 1410/11 n.d. in similar hand to (g) above, fols. 118r-121v original foliation 11r-14v section numbers viij and viiij at bottom right hand corner.

(o) Copy of inspeximus of Richard II of Charters of Edward I, II and III granting privileges to alien and in particular to Hanse merchants in England. 1 May, 1377 n.d. in similar hand to (g) above, fols. 121v-125r, original foliation 14v-18r. Section numbers cj cij at bottom right hand corner of folios 124r and 125r.

(p) Various memoranda relating to 1444, 1459 and 24 October 1481, fol. 125v, original foliation 18v, fols. 124 and 125 are of a piece with fols. 39 and 40.

III. Fols. 126 - 145.

(a) Copy of letter of Richard III under the signet against wearing of liveries 5 July 1484 fol. 126r.

(b) List of persons who had lent money to the town, names arranged under parishes of origin with notes of manner of repayment 30 October 1471, fols. 127r-135v.

(c) Copy of a writ to collectors of taxes in Southampton to enforce statute of 9 Henry IV (20 October 1407) concerning taxation of aliens' goods with extract of the text of the writ. 7 February 1480/1, fol. 136r.

(d) Casualties during mayoralty of Vincent Tehy 1484-5 fols. 137v-138v.

(e) Various memoranda concerning town charters taken out of the aduit house 1510/12, fol. 139r. Notes of causalties during Mayoralty of John Bawdewyn n.d. c. 1506/7, fol. 139v.

(f) Casualties during mayoralty of Nicholas Day, 1518/19 fol. 140

(g) Notes of money paid to Walter Latham, town clerk, by the broker and Christopher Ambrose the water bailiff 1484/5, fol. 145r.

(h) Copy of certificate of receipt for £40 of the customs paid by the King's collectors to John Ludlow, mayor, 20 January 1478/9.

All these folios are ruled as for a ledger. Fols. 141-144 are blank.

IV. Fols. 146-170

With the exception of portion of undated Water bailiff's account on fol. 146 and copy of lease of two tenements on west side of Bugle Street to Adrian Baker 18 September 1485 on fol. 163 the whole of this section is devoted to notes of money paid into and out of the town treasury 1483-1487.

V. Fols 171-214

(a) Extracts from the casualties of the mayoralty of Lewis Aynes 1487/8 fol. 171r.

(b) Notes of money paid into and out of the town treasury 1487-1488 fols. 172-116r with exception of note that John Nicholls should "have ... the nixt Porteshipp" 27 October 1522 on fol. 173r.

(c) Memoranda of recognisances to keep the peace, to accept arbitration, to present accounts for offices held, to serve as town gunner, to repay money owing and to appear at Quarter Sessions, interspersed with various memoranda, including not of names of porters and their sureties 1501/2 fol. 180r, agreement with the tallow chandlers as to the price charged for candles 1507, fol. 183v [printed in Gidden, Remembrance Book Vol. 1 p. 115 as fol. 89b], note of settlement of dispute between Joan Berbour and the barbers who had refused to allow her to continue as a barber after her husband's death, 9 February 1511/12, fol. 185r. note of agreement between butchers, chandlers and glovers, 1518, fol. 188r, note of names of weavers and shearmen and the wardens of their guilds 1519/20. fol. 191, 1488-1520, 1523-4, 1529, 1536, 1541, 1544, 1549, 1553-4, fols. 176v-196r.
