George Lancelotte Evans 1919 - 1979
Mr Evans was, at his death, Senior Assistant County Librarian, Hertfordshire Library Service. He had worked in libraries for over 40 years. He had started as an assistant at Birkenhead in 1938. During the war he served in the army and he spent a long time as a prisoner of war in Germany after capture in Crete. In 1947 he became an area librarian in the West Riding. In 1950 he was appointed Librarian and Museum Curator of Hitchin UDC. On 1 April 1951 he became the first Regional Librarian in the Hertfordshire County library becoming a Senior Assistant County Librarian in 1974, when the hitherto independent library at Hitchin was merged into the new Hertfordshire Library Service.
His wide ranging interests were coupled with a great depth of knowledge of many subjects including particularly local studies, ecclesiastical architecture and natural history. In consequence he gained respect nationally among museum curators and made an immense contribution to the recording of Hertfordshire history both as a writer (A Hertfordshire Record (1975)) and as editor for the Local History Council, of Hertfordshire Past and Present
