The volume consists of Despatches to the Secretary of State for India from the Government of India Foreign Department, dated 4 January 1868-24 June 1869, with enclosures.The contents include papers relating to: affairs in the Persian Gulf, particularly Bushire [Bushehr], Bahrein [Bahrain] and Abothabee [Abu Dhabi]; affairs in Muscat and the interior of Oman, notably concerning the succession to the Muscat throne and Muscat's territorial claims against Persia [Iran]; the appointment of the Governor of Bunder Abbass [Bandar-e 'Abbas]; the subsidy payable by Zanzibar to Muscat; subsidies paid by the British to the 'chiefs' on the Mekran [Makran] Coast for protection of the land line of telegraph; the British policy of preventing operations by sea by non-British states; the trade in enslaved persons at Zanzibar; and the eastern frontier of the Persian Empire and Persia's alleged infractions in the direction of Afghanistan, Seistan [Sistan], Khelat [Kalat] and Mekran.
