Description (What the record is about)
-
This map depicts the course of the Helmand River at its junction with the Pariun [Parian] branch near the disputed border between Afghanistan and Persia [Iran]. The map was drawn up by HM Consul for Seistan [Sistan] and Kain [Qaen], Major Robert Arthur Edward Benn. The map depicts the numerous streams and channels of the Helmand and its tributary branches, showing canals, bunds, and channels. The map distinguishes between Persian and Afghan canals and channels, including a long channel under construction by Afghanistan. The map also shows the sites of settlements along the Helmand and depicts some stylized vegetation at the junction with the Pariun branch. Letters running from 'A' to 'F' plus 'X' and 'Y' correspond to features described in Benn's report on the river (ff 314-316), to which this map is an accompaniment. The map is dated 29 October 1902 and bears Benn's printed signature.
