Description

Correspondence of Thomas, 1st Lord Weymouth, consisting of letters to him from various members of the Finch family (he having married Frances Finch, dau. of Heneage, 2nd Earl of Winchilsea) the chief being:

1. Heneage Finch, 2nd Earl of Winchilsea, [d. 1689], to his son-in-law (Lord Weymouth). ff.5-194 passim. In a postscript to a letter dated 30 Aug. 1673 (f.9) Lord Winchilsea asks his son-in-law to look after his interests if they have a war with Spain, and beg his Majesty to appoint him (Lord Winchilsea) as Ambassador at Venice or President at Tangier: and in April 1675 (f.19) he hopes he will be sent Ambassador to Spain. In the summer of 1676 he was travelling in Italy and in a letter dated 23 June from Florence, he says, "I am not out of ye way to serve his Majesty, if I be so much as thought one". He offers in the following November to serve the King at Turin (at the express wish of Marquis San Toma, 1st Secretary of State) for £1000 from ye King and £1000 for to put me into a Decent Equipage", (f.47) but in January 1677 he travels from Venice to Smyrna and there is (f.50) a "Memoire or a Narrative" of the voyage of some one who travelled in his company. Lord Winchilsea was back in England in 1677. Three years later he proposes to leave England again "to retire into some frugall place for a while" ..... "The trouble I have to see my selfe forgott at Court and ye little assistance I have from my Relations is not without cause and hath been taken notice of by my friends". (f.103. In Feb. 1681 he complains bitterly of the Lord Chancellor's [sc. Heneage, Lord Finch, aft. 1st Earl of Nottingham] insincerity towards him in recommending him to the King for an appointment. (f.119). His last letter is dated 19 July 1688 in which he complains of his bad health and his anxiety to go abroad. (f.194).

5. Heneage Finch [son of Heneage, 2nd Earl of Winchilsea and himself 4th Earl of Winchilsea in 1712] to his brother-in-law Lord Weymouth: Paris, Angers and Eastwell, 22 Jan. 1676[7] - 6 Aug. 1679. ff. 21,23,45,55,71,75.

6. Charles Finch, son of Heneage, 2nd Earl of Winchilsea, to his brother-in-law Lord Weymouth: 4 July 1676 - 26 Apr. 1678. ff.31-35, 39,43,67,316.

7. Thomas Finch, son of Heneage, 2nd Earl of Winchilsea, to his brother-in-law Lord Weymouth: 26 Nov. 1677- 11 Feb. 1693[4]. ff.63,69,78-82,93,95,123,128,132,136,204,222,233 240.

8. Leopold William Finch, son of Heneage, 2nd Earl of Winchilsea, Warden of All Souls, Oxford, Prebendary of Canterbury, to his brother-in-law Lord Weymouth: 1679-1699. ff.73-324 passim. At f.89 is a college bill.
