Two ts accounts (26pp) and an ms diary recording the experiences of an officer from the Punjab Regiment while serving as Staff Captain to the 2nd Infantry Brigade in East Africa, January - December 1917, referring to the unpleasant African climate and several periods of sickness, the difficulties of transportation through the bush and the shortage of water, the unreliable-ness of native porters, the administrative organisation of Hanforce and rudimentary nature of the maps and orders issued, and the series of actions which Hanforce had with von Lettow-Vorbeck's army until the German commander was forced at the end of the year to withdraw into Portuguese East Africa. Also held with the collection are papers relating to his service with the Indian Army in the interwar years, including an undated ts memorandum (6pp) written by him as a statistical study of the training of recruits and trained soldiers in the Indian Army; an undated ts memorandum (1p) in which he advocates that men should be specially enlisted as battalion signallers; ts copies of official letters and reports (21pp) relating to a Court of Enquiry at Bombay into the circumstances under which Subedar Atta Mohd of the 4th Battalion, 8th Punjab Regiment, was placed under arrest by Kellie, 30 November - 2 December 1931; and 4 ms letters from Indians, July 1916 - April 1924.
