Administrative / biographical background

First published in 1632, "Lo Specchio..." is an important work on conic sections - hyperbolas, ellipses and parabolas - and their 'marvellous effects', among which is the celebrated mirror of Archimedes, allegedly used at Syracuse to set fire to ships (DSB). It includes the idea of the reflecting telescope, of which some have claimed Cavalieri to be the inventor, preceding Gregory and Newton (Norman 418). Carli-Favaro 203; Cinti 123.
