Description

This technical term was used to denote the procedure whereby a defendant was made to appear in court i.e. the various forms of writ issued to the sheriff directing him to produce individuals or representatives of parishes before the justices. Writs of venire facias (summons), distringas (distraint of property), and capias (arrest) represent successive stages in the attempt to bring to court defendants who failed to appear.
