Miss Bush was a very great friend of the Field Officer's great-aunt, Marian Hudson. They met at Warrington Training College in c. 1917. They shared a house from c. late 1940's to 1973, when Marian died. Alice suffered a stroke in 1968 and so much of the information for this deposit was given by her sister Lilian. See attached sheet for further details of the Bush family.
Miss Bush was born in 1897 in the village of Endmoor, four miles from Kendal. Her parents were Arthur William Bush and Sarah Elizabeth Woodhouse, both born in Endmoor. Mr Bush worked at a Gunpowder Factory in Endmoor called 'Gatebeck', of which he was manager. This was one of four factories: Gatebeck, founded in 1840, owned by John Westlake Weston, with a subsidiary called Bassinghill. The village of Endmoor had grown up around Gatebeck and was the only source of employment in the area except for farming. The other factories were: Lowood, at Haverthwaite; Sedgewick and one at Elterwater. The group were taken over first by Nobel's, then by I. C. I., and then closed, although there is still a factory, now moved to Ardeer in Scotland.
Miss Bush was one of nine children; Lizzie, born 1892, who married Horace Hurst, a teacher and had one daughter, now Mrs Ann Lightfoot of Alston Hall. Lizzie lived in Lancaster.
Hannah, who married John Sandham and had one son, John.
Alfred, born 1896, who married Edith and had three daughters, Margaret, Jean and Helen.
Bill, who married Isabel Parker and had one daughter, Isabel, now Mrs Armstrong. They all lived in Kendal.
Alice, the depositor, who went to Endmoor School, then Kendal High and trained as an Infants and Junior Mistress at Warrington Training College and was later Headmistress of Kendal Church of England Primary School. She lives in Kendal.
Frederick, who married Elizabeth, but has no children. (He went to Queens College, Oxford.)
John, married Gladys Kendall, and has three children, Ann, Joan and John.
Lilian, who went to Endmoor School and Kendal High School, like her sister. She went to University and became a teacher, out in Australia and New Zealand. She lives in Stavely.
Alan, who was a parachutist at Arnhem during the Second World War, later became a teacher, and was Headmaster of Murchiston Castle School in Scotland. He married Kate Bryson and has three children: Robert, Sarah and Peter.
