Description

Commonplace book of Thomas James (d.1711), London bookseller and mathematical printer to the King. James was a descendant of Thomas James (1572/3-1629), Bodley's Librarian and religious controversialist, and was the husband of the authoress Eleanor James. The commonplaces are mainly of a religious and theological nature. One is dated 12 Oct 1672 (p. 13); another 18 Feb 1699 (p. 377). At p. 1 is a title 'Mr. Thomas James's Common Place Book' (not in the hand of the text). The name Thomas James, possibly autograph, is also written at p. 385.

Immediate source of acquisition
Recorded in William Reading, 'Bibliothecae cleri Londinensis in Collegio Sionensi catalogus' (London, 1724) with shelfmark C.17. Presumably acquired with the library of Thomas James in 1711. On the bequest by Thomas James (d. 1711) of some 3,000 books to Sion College, see the Sion College Book of Benefactors (Sion L40.2/E64), pp. 128-160. Transferred from Sion College to Lambeth Palace Library, 1996.
