Description

Monson 7/11 is a volume made up of papers bound together. Directions for binding by the sixth Lord Monson, an antiquary and collector of manuscripts, directed that it should be labelled Newton Papers, Lincoln History, and it also has the number Monson Ms. CXCIX. These Newton papers are part of a considerable collection relating to the Newton-Archer family who had estates in Lincolnshire, Essex, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Derbyshire and Suffolk, some of whose papers apparently came on to the market about the middle of the last century. The sixth Lord Monson bought title deeds and estate papers mainly relating to Lincolnshire, together with family papers, patents, etc. The numbers were written in red ink, apparently by the sixth Lord Monson before binding.

Items Mon 7/11/75-85 are put together as a unit with binding papers inserted, labelled Modern Grantham Papers. On the face of it there does not seem to be anything to identify them as or to link them with the Newton Papers. As they are at the end of Mon 7/11 it may be that they were papers acquired separately and put in to make up a volume.
