Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume W2 is the second in the series of two 'W' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Peterborough, which were transferred to Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Pickering & Smith. The preferments in this volume concern the Peterborough Bishoprick Estates, which were transferred as follows: part commuted to the Ecclesiastical Commisssioners on 24 February 1860 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 24 February 1862; and part vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners 29 September 1862 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 4 November 1862 by Order in Council.; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports. ; However, it is important to mention that a portion of the Peterborough Episcopal Estates was re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation on 29 September 1862 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 4 November 1862. These estates were then subsequently transferred back to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners as Bishopric Late Permanent Estates (under the Episcopal Endowments and Stipends Measure, 1943) on 6 April 1946 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 22 March 1946. ; The volume also has added annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical area covered within the volume includes: the county of Northamptonshire, parishes of Eye, Newborough, Paston, Peterborough St. John the Baptist, Peakirk, Walton, Marholm [Marholme], Etton and Werrington; the county of Huntingdonshire, parish of Standground; the county of Lincolnshire, parish of Sutton St. Edmund; and the city of London, parishes of St. Bride and St. Gregory.
