Dr Edward L Giles, PhD, was a teacher at Launcelot Rd Junior School, Downham. His diaries describe the evacuations of the school first to Folkestone, Kent, and then to Chaffcombe, Chard, Somerset. Dr Giles was a conscientious objector.
