Methodism came to Filey in 1806, with meetings held in barns and sheds. The first properly constituted Wesleyan Methodist society was formed in 1810 and a chapel was built in Providence Place the following year. The Sunday School was established in 1832, the Victoria Hall in 1839 and the Day School in West Avenue was built in 1857. The church, built in 1877, was burned in a fire in 1918 and was reopened after extensive work in 1923. The steeple was cracked in the earthquake of 1932.
Filey Wesleyan Methodist Circuit was formed out of the Bridlington Circuit in 1862. It originally comprised chapels in Filey, Hunmanby, Reighton, North Burton and Gristhorpe. The Wesleyan Day School in West Avenue, Filey, is now (2002) the premises of Dixons Discount Warehouse.
