These are the records of the clerk of the peace acting as clerk to the lieutenancy, and later also as clerk to the lord lieutenant's advisory committee. For the most part the surviving records relate to the militia after the reorganization under 15 & 16 Victoria c.50 (1852)
L/J/1/2-6, L/J/4/1-22 and L/S/1-4 relate to the Lord Lieutenant's Advisory Committee and to its function of nominating justices of the peace and monitoring their service. L/J5/1-4 are similar records of the committee which formerly advised the Lord Chancellor on such appointments within the City of Gloucester. The records are closed for 75 years
