Introduction

The collection has been divided into three classes

Some of the material was collected by Canon Long's predecessor as rector of Wokingham, Edward Sturges (1875-1904). Canon Long's own interest in the history of Wokingham appears to have begun soon after he became rector in 1904; it continued after he left (see WO/D1/3/2/118-129) to become rector of Whitchurch, Oxon in 1933. He remained at Whitchurch until 1945, and presented the collection to the borough of Wokingham in the 1940s
