Description (What the record is about)
-
Brown cloth post-bound 'Luxor' photograph album measuring 265 x 300 mm, with title 'Photographs' stamped in gold on front cover. Prints are mounted three or four to a page, with reference code identifying negative number. This reference code consists of a letter of the alphabet for each volume of negatives, and a number for each negative within the volumes. Captions for each photograph can be found both with the list in each negative album, and in two notebooks which duplicate this information. The collection also contained the original nitrate negatives: these have been duplicated onto safety film and the originals destroyed. The original arrangement of twenty books of negatives (coded A-T) has been broken up into a more convenient system which follows and corresponds with the new numbering of the albums themselves: thus the negative number for Photo 19/1 (50) is now ON 19/1 (50) (where ON = Original Negative). A broad and very selective breakdown of the contents includes the following subjects: European groups on tour (prints 1–2); Manglin Sawbwa, bodyguard and daughter (prints 3–5); Ta Mansum, views at crossing point (prints 6–8); Europeans outside bungalow and John Clague in sedan chair (prints 9–11); Tangyan (print 12); village drum, Rawnkaing (print 14); aged villager, Rawnkaing (print 15); views and portraits at Residency (prints 16–21); Loikaw Bridge (print 24); bazaar scenes, Loikaw (prints 26–28); European sports, Mong Pang and Taungyi Poppy Fair (prints 33–40); Gokteik Viaduct (prints 44–45); King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry camp, Tangyan (prints 49); Katonaw Mule Camp, 15 December 1936 (print 54); Lihsaw liquor sellers, 19 December 1936 (prints 55–56); Shan women (print 58); Wa tribals and Shans (print 59); scenes in Mong Lem and elsewhere connected with the League of Nations Sino-Burmese Burmese Commission (prints 62–142).
