The Lydney and District Hospital was founded in 1882 by Mrs. M.E. Bathurst of Lydney Park, at a converted cottage in Aylburton. A new hospital was built between 1907-09. Between 1914 and 1919 the hospital was used by the Red Cross for nursing war wounded, and from 1925 the hospital operated a contributory medical care scheme. Extensions were made to the buildings in 1932, and after transfer to the South Western Regional Hospital Board in 1948, again in 1958-63.
