The Bexleyheath Burial Board was established at a public meeting on 20 June 1877 to provide a new burial ground for the Parish of Christchurch, Bexleyheath. The Burial Act 1852 provided for the creation of such a Board appointed by the Parish Vestry to borrow money to purchase the land required and to charge the costs to the local rates. A plot of land was purchased in February 1879 and work began on laying out the new cemetery, which was opened in June that year.
The Board continued to operate under the authority of the Parish Vestry until 1 July 1936 when its property and duties were transferred to Bexley Urban District Council.
