The Athenaeum Literary Institute, founded in 1853, purchased the New Assembly Rooms on Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds, in 1854.
After increasing financial difficulties the building was sold by the Trustees in 1935 to the Borough Council.
Rooms on the first floor were then leased by the Council to the newly-constituted Athenaeum Club.
