The Sussex Mutual Permanent Benefit Building Society set up in Brighton in 1872. In 1877 it changed its name to the Sussex Mutual Permanent Investment Building Society and its registered office to West Street in Brighton. By the 1890s, the business had moved to North Street which was the rapidly growing business centre of the town. Between the 1890s and the 1950s the Horton Ledger family were closely associated with the building society with a father being succeeded by his son in the post of society secretary. In the mid-1950s, the business moved its head office to Western Road in Hove and changed its name to the Sussex Mutual. The late twentieth century was a period of amalgamations in the building society sector: the Sussex Mutual became part of the Regency Building Society in 1985, which then became part of the Portman Building Society. In 2007, the Portman merged with Nationwide Building Society.
