J.P. Councillor Mottram has worked for the railways in the Liverpool area at Lime Street since 1929. In 1967 he was appointed British Rail Divisional Welfare Officer for Liverpool. He has been active in railway union affairs, holding the Transport Salaried Staffs Association gold medallion for meritorious service (see Biographical Newscuttings: Mottram, Mr. J.).
The first branch of the Railway Clerks' Association was formed in London in 1865. The Association changed its name in 1951 to become the Transport Salaried Staffs Association.
The first of the volumes listed below describes the inauguration of the Liverpool Branch of the Railway Clerks' Association in November 1901 - "... it was decided by those present to form a Branch of the ........ Association in Liverpool, the registered office of the said association being at 11 Bank Chambers, High Street, Doncaster .........". The aims of the newly formed branch were given as being the achievement of reasonable hours of duty, better salaries, payment for Sunday working, efficient holiday reliefs, better office conditions, promotion by merit etc.
