Born May 1796 in Bristol and sent at the age of seven to Sedgley Park School near Wolverhampton. At fourteen entered his father's counting-house. He worked for his father for 3 years before returning to Sedgley Park to study for the priesthood, moving to St Mary's College, Oscott, Birmingham, after a year. In 1820 he was ordained by Bishop Milner. After serving the Stourbridge mission, near Oscott, for a time, he was sent to Costessey Hall, Norfolk, as chaplain to Sir George Staford Jerningham. He remained there for 52 years. He was appointed Grand Vicar to Thomas Walsh, Vicar Apostolic of the Midland District. In 1850 he received the degree of Doctor of Divinity. He later became Grand Vicar of the Vicariate and on the formation of the Northampton diocese in 1850 he became its first Provost.
