The 5th Earl was a collector of MSS. and also created 'special collections' from among his own papers.
Here are to be found three groups of papers (a) letters, etc. removed to form separate subject units, e.g. 'Historical MS. Letters'; (b) 'autograph books' being volumes composed of individual letters of distinguished people; (c) loose MS. items acquired by purchase or casually removed from bundles and never replaced.
