Administrative / biographical background

The Bednall Hall Estate lies in the township of Acton Trussell and Bednall in the ancient parish of Baswich. Bednall Hall dates from the early 19th century and originally belonged to the Stokes family. When William Stokes died in 1819, he was succeeded at the Hall by his son, William Stokes, the younger. The latter married Mary Taverner but died in 1824, leaving the estate to his wife, in trust for his two young daughters, Anne and Mary. Anne Stokes never married but her sister, Mary, married James Glover Heath in 1849. The two sisters managed the estate together until Anne's death in 1894, when Mary became the sole owner. When she died in 1913, the estate was acquired by Dr Thomas Kenderdine. He occupied the Hall until his death in 1936, whereupon it passed to his eldest son, Dr Thomas Bradley Kenderdine. It remained in the Kenderdine family until 1986.
