Administrative / biographical background

The Collegiate School was founded in 1903 in Redland by Mrs. Agnes Adams and her daughter, Susannah. By 1915 the school needed a new site, so Redland House was purchased. After spending the period of the Second world war in Langford Court, Somerset, the school moved to Winterbourne House in January 1946. The school was run from that date until 1970 by Susannah and her husband, Rex Hopes. The collegiate School was run as a small school, intending to exploit its smaller size for the benefit of the pupils. The school was ecumenical and multi-faith, accepting pupils from Europe, Africa, Asia and Central America.
