Mr. Boardman was secretary of the Bolton and Walkden branches from c.1945 - 1974., working full-time for the union. He grew up in Leeds, where his father was a glue-boiler and his mother a seamstress. He found work at a Jewish tailors as a measure cutter and eventual ended up working for Barton's new factory in Walkden. He was a shop steward there, head shop steward, and eventually a full-timer for the union.
