Administrative / biographical background

The Barge Builders' Trade Union was formed in 1872 to represent men working in the bargebuilding industry on the River Thames. It was renamed the Iron, Steel and Wood Barge Builders and Helpers' Association (ISWBBHA) in 1940. It merged with the Transport and General Workers' Union on 1 January 1973, becoming 1/1368 Iron, Steel and Wood Barge Builders and Helpers Branch.
