The small town of Brading, lying near the front gates of Nunwell by its very proximity early attracted the property interest of the Oglander family. Although the Oglanders, with their house at Nunwell, gave all the appearance of being the squires of Brading, in fact the family never owned much property in Brading itself, nor did they ever have the right of presentation to the Parish Church. This was largely because of Brading's status as a borough.
