Introduction
The Lymington Borough Records form an extensive and important collection comprising manorial records, title deeds and family papers as well as the records of the Corporation itself
Lymington was granted its first charter by the Earls of Devon during the 12th century but no copies of this or of subsequent grants of privileges were found in the collection. The earliest surviving documents are a series of 14th and 15th century deeds concerning Holmes Mead, known then as Damerosehay or Bouvedonescroft, which was conveyed to the Borough for charitable purposes
The Borough proceedings begin towards the end of the 16th century and form a virtually complete series to 1974. A Watch Committee was appointed in 1835 and from that year Notice Books and Registers of Declarations were kept. These were the chief effects upon the records of the Municipal Reform Act of 1835, for the main series of proceedings continue in unbroken sequence, unaffected by this turning-point in the development of Local Government. A large quantity of papers of miscellaneous character has been listed with the Borough Clerk's Records. Among them are records of the Collector of Salt Duties and Coal Meter, included here for convenience as neither was a borough officer. The records of the Local Board of Health form a distinct series although the Board was merely the Corporation acting for public health purposes under the provisions of the Local Government Act, 1858
In addition to records pertaining to the Corporation there are two Poor Law Union rate books and documents of local interest presented to the Council by various individuals. They include records relating to the Manors of Old and New Lymington, title deeds to "The Grove", "Linden House" and other property, and papers of the Burrard Family. Among the small group of miscellaneous items is a copy of Grove's "Views of the Principal Seats and Marine and Landscape Scenery in the Neighbourhood of Lymington" published in 1832
