Lothian of Melbourne

The majority of the documents are 18th and 19th century deeds, leases, rentals, plans and other estate records, but there are some medieval and 16th century deeds relating to the Carthusian Priory of Beauvale, (DD/LM/31/3-4), manorial surveys of the Commonwealth period (DD/LM/187/4/1-2), and papers relating to 16th and 17th century legal disputes (DD/LM/187/1-2, DD/LM/187/3). There is a considerable amount of material on coal mining, mainly of 19th century date, but including, for example, detailed accounts of the construction of a drainage sough at a Selston mine in 1573-1576 (DD/LM/187/3/2). There are also plans and other papers relating to the layout of the grounds of Beauvale House, an outstanding Victorian mansion built for the 7th Earl Cowper in 1873 by the architect E. W. Godwin, 1872-1874 (DD/LM/50/8).

The papers comprise the Nottinghamshire estate records of the Melbourne Hall Estate, mainly in Greasley and Selston and district, but including Beauvale, Moorgreen, Newthorpe, Kimberley, Bagthorpe, Underwood, Jacksdale, Watnall and Bulwell, accumulated prior to the dispersal of the estates by sale in 1915. The nucleus of Melbourne's Nottinghamshire estates was the former property of Beauvale Priory. After the dissolution of the priory the estates passed via the Husseys to the Morryson family of Cassiobury, Hertfordshire. They then passed by marriage to the Capells, who were created Earls of Essex in 1661. Sir Robert Sutton acquired them in c1724, but they were sold by his trustees to his former lawyer and land agent, Matthew Lamb, in 1753. The Lambs became Lords Melbourne in 1770, but the estates again passed by the marriage of Emily Lamb to the 5th Earl Cowper in 1805; (she later married, in 1839, the 3rd Viscount Palmerston). Following the death of the 7th Earl Cowper in 1905 the Nottinghamshire property was left in trust for his widow Catherine, but on her own death in 1913 the estates were broken up and sold in 1915. Melbourne Hall and the other Cowper estates passed by the marriage of the 7th Earl's sister to Lord Walter Kerr ancestor of the present owner, Lord Lothian.
