Description (What the record is about)
-
The site of the British Legion Hall at Hartfield was conveyed by Herbrand William Dundonald Brassey Sackville, the 9th Earl De La Warr in July 1928. The hall was built by local subscription, with the object of providing a social centre for ex-servicemen in the neighbourhood of Hartfield. A fund was opened in 1948 to commemorate those who died in the Second World War. The Town Croft was subsequently purchased to serve as a War Memorial Ground; the ground was subsequently vested in Hartfield Parish Council. The British Legion hall was sold around 1952 due to difficulties of maintenance. The Hartfield British Legion Hall Fund was established by a Charity Commission scheme of 19 September 1952, to be used for the benefit of the parish of Hartfield and neighbourhood, with preference for offering financial assistance to ex-servicemen, and for the maintainance and improvement of the village hall and the war memorial recreation ground. In 1956 funds were used to replace the cricket pavilion as an addition to the War Memorial Ground. The fund was wound up in 1998.
