An Act of 1696 established a corporate body in Bristol known as the Incorporation of the Poor in whom was vested the management of the poor of the city. They were responsible for maintaining the poor by a rate certified under the corporate seal; the rate to be apportioned to the 17 parishes in the city (plus the Castle Precincts) and to be levied by the Churchwardens and Overseers.
Before 1696 the collection and administration of the poor rate was dealt with by the parish and surviving records can be found with the parish records.
