Immediate source of acquisition

Deposited by the Clerk to the Justices per Mr J R Clube of Leatherhead Local History Society, under the Public Records Acts, 1958 and 1967, in February 1993.

Administrative / biographical background

Licensing was the responsibility of the justices of the peace in Petty Sessions. For most of the period covered by the plans listed below the legislation setting out the scope of their jurisdiction was the Licensing (Consolidation) Act, 1910 (10 Edw. 7 & 1 Geo. 5 c xxiv). Under s.15(1) of the Act applicants for new licences had to deposit plans of the premises to be licensed with the clerk to the justices. These are the plans listed below. Section 50(1) of the Act ordered the clerk to keep registers of premises licensed. None have been deposited for the Epsom division.
