Administrative / biographical background

The church was founded in July 1840 by five preachers who broke away from the Wesleyan Methodist Association in Liverpool. They first met at the Lime St. Academy. The following month they erected a temporary building for worship in Great Charlotte St., and in 1845 they moved to Zion Chapel in Elizabeth St., alongside which a new church was added in 1870. The church at that time was known as Liverpool Free Gospel Church.

In 1931, the house known as 'Sandy Knowe' in Mill Lane, Wavertree, was purchased, off which a church building was erected. There is a brief history of the church in their pamphlet 'Centenary Celebrations, 1840-1940'.
