Description

Folios 111-112. Letter from Walter May Barton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mitford and Launditch Poor Law Union, to the Local Government Board. He writes requesting their sanction to the payment by the guardians to George Taylor, Medical Officer of Mattishall district in the Mitford and Launditch Poor Law Union, £2 for services rendered. These being that he has attended James Reeve of Lyng on a daily basis from 18 November 1884 until early part of January 1885 to use the catheta [catheter] for retention of urine. Reeve aged 71 is no longer able to resume his usual work.

Annotated: 'In January last year this same Board of guardians recommended a payment of £1. In a similar issue but of shorter duration for which there stated an unfortunate precedent, for I do not hesitate to say that this is an operation for which no fee should be allowed, and for which: no fee is now applied for in most other districts. If granted it should I think be limited to the present case. Send an intimation that it cannot be allowed in future, as the rules distinctly prohibit extra fees in much more serious cases that the usage of a catheter', 5 March 1885.
