Immediate source of acquisition

On abolition of South Yorkshire County Council on 31 March 1986, the records passed from South Yorkshire County Record Office, by agreement of the four South Yorkshire District Councils, to the custody of Sheffield Archives as lead authority

Administrative / biographical background

A Appleby & Sons, of 30 Wilkinson St., Sheffield 10, are a firm of architects who first date from 1865 when Alfred Appleby worked from 143, Fitzwilliam St. The firm have subsequently operated from 14 St James Street (until 1941) 9 Houndsfield Road (1941 to 1957) before moving to their 1977 offices.

All plans were destroyed after a direct bomb hit during the Second World War.

The Appleby's are no longer active within the firm, and Mr Abrahams is the senior partner of a practice which undertakes both industrial and domestic jobs in Sheffield and the surrounding area
