Included in the wounded soldiers at present in the Henley in Arden British Red Cross V.A.D. Hospital is Co-Sgt-Maj Field, of the 3rd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, who, going out to the front with the original Expeditionary Force, has rendered most useful service to his country. At the Battle of Mons he went all through the great retirement, subsequently taking part in the battle of the Marne (in which his regiment was in reserve), and the struggle on the Aisne. After being withdrawn from the latter area the next fighting of the gallant Worcesters took place in Richebourg, in the La Bassee district, which has been the scene of sanguinary conflicts, the object being to stop the German outflanking movement. The endeavours were later continued in order to push the enemy back to the line of St. Illois, and from there the Worcesters took part in the operations at La Quinque Rue, neat Festubert, and still in the La Bassee district, where very heavy fighting took place, and in which the Worcesters again distinguished themselves by their resource and gallantry. Later a push was again made further north, and the regiment came into action at Ploegsteert, the result being another violent struggle. Pressing onward still further north, the Worcesters came into the Ypres district, which has been held so gallantly in the face of heavy onslaughts by the enemy. After several of the struggles Sgt-Maj Field was wounded at Hooge, about 2 1/2 miles east of Ypres, in the left thigh, the wound being caused by shrapnel. This was after 10 months continuous fighting, which included all the rough times experienced during the winter. Sgt-Maj Fields unit was the 3rd Division of the 2nd Army Corps under Gen Sir H. Smith-Dorrien, and this Corps has seen the brunt of the fighting from the beginning and with no respite. His regiment is noted for its shooting and signalling, and the gallant Sgt-Major has been connected with all of the shooting teams of the regiment for some years, these selected units having had the honour of competing at Bisley. Sergeant Major Field, who has seen 14 years service in his Majesty's Forces, is closely connected with the Midlands and the district, his original home being in the Bromsgrove area.
