Administrative / biographical background

The Union Club was founded in 1901 as a social club for members of Seaford Golf Club, which had been established in 1887. The golf club was then based on the present Seaford Head course; the clubhouse was a wooden construction and offered only very basic facilities. The Union Club was founded as a non-political organisation to cater for the social needs of the golf players, many of whom lived in London and visited Seaford at weekends

The Union Club initially rented Bay House, Seaford. Although formed primarily to serve the needs of golfers, the first non-golf members were elected in 1904. The association with golf became less pronounced after the Seaford Golf Club moved to East Blatchington, where a club-house with good social facilities was opened on 5 September 1907. The Union Club moved to Bay View, Pelham Road, Seaford, in 1908, and attempts were made to improve its facilities, in order to attract golf club members at times when the course was not open

Ties with Seaford Golf Club continued to lessen. In 1913 the Union Club committee agreed to propose that in future all candidates for membership should be proposed and seconded by Union Club members; formerly golf club members were accepted automatically on application

The club moved to its present premises at Stafford House, Stafford Road, Seaford, in 1928
