The award ceremony was held on 14 Oct 1997.The shortlisted authors were:Arundhati Roy with the winning novel 'The God of Small Things', published by Flamingo,Jim Crace with 'Quarantine', published by Viking,Mick Jackson with 'The Underground Man', published by Picador,Bernard MacLaverty with 'Grace Notes', published by Cape,Tim Parks with 'Europa', published by Secker & Warburg, andMadeleine St John with 'The Essence of the Thing', published by Fourth Estate.The Judges were Professor Gillian Beer (Chair), Rachel Billington, Jason Cowley, Jan Dalley, and Professor Dan Jacobson.
