INTRODUCTION
The introduction to this, the twentieth volume of Additional Manuscripts, is a suitable place from which to look back at what my Predecessor, Mr. Francis W. Steer, wrote in his introduction to the very first volume in 1957. He wrote
"The class of Additional Manuscripts (Add Mss) embraces all the smaller gifts and deposits of documents as distinct from the large family and estate collections or accumulations from solicitors' offices, each of which will be referred to and quoted by name
It is hoped that the catalogue will be sufficiently clear to readers without further elaboration, especially as the few abbreviations which have been used (e.g. s. for son, dau. for daughter, occ. for occupation) would appear to be obvious. The following points should however be emphasized
(i) Names of parishes and manors are normally given in their modern form, unless the spelling in the document appears to be philologically or etymologically important or to be otherwise unusual
(ii) Christian names are normally given in their modern spelling, archaic variants such as 'Johane' and 'Wyllyam' being ignored
(iii) Rods and perches are normally omitted, area being given in acres only
(iv) In calendars of deeds of two parties only, the first-named party is subsequently referred to as (a) and the second-named party as (b), although these are not stated at the head of the entry
(v) In the entries for maps, the size is always given in inches, the height being given before the width
No index has been provided to this volume as all relevant details have been included in the general office indexes of persons, places, subjects, and manors
Students are asked to exercise care in referring to these documents, and to use the form Add Mss followed by the relevant number; e.g. the first document in this volume should be quoted as Add Mss 1 and the whole group as Add Mss 1 - 105. In printed works the reference should be preceded by West Sussex Record Office (or W.S.R.O. in subsequent references), e.g. W.S.R.O., Add Mss 1
The documents in this volume are particularly mixed in character: a copy of William Lilly's Latin Grammar (Add Mss 14,874); a series of A.R.P. Records (Add Mss 15,029 - 15,038); title deeds, the earliest of which is a 1348 conveyance of land in Pagham (Add Mss 16,069); maps, the most interesting of which are the collection of Sir Wilbraham Gates Lennox, 1811-1882 (Add Mss 15,471 - 15,635); letters, and account books
