Description (What the record is about)
-
Ts. transcript (42pp) of a fine series of 54 letters to his mother from a subaltern in the 7th Battalion Black Watch (51st Highland Division) describing his voyage out to the Middle East (June-August 1942) and his service with his unit in the Eighth Army in the Western Desert from August 1942 until his death in action on 24 October 1942 at the outset of the Battle of El Alamein. The letters contain many references to the soldier's preoccupation with the everyday inconveniences of life in the desert and occasional indications of the writer's frustration at the tedium and pointlessness of Army routine.
