Title
Bailey Collection: 'Tibet 1909. F.M.B. [vol.] VII.' Photographer(s): Bailey, Frederick Marshman.
Date
1909
Description

Red half-leather bound album measuring 375x280 mm, with title as above stamped in gilt on front cover; prints mounted with pencilled captions beneath. This volume contains prints 237-58 from Photo 1083/19 as well as the 118 prints from part 20. The album is uniform with the preceding volumes, with binding in poor condition (front board detached and spine piece loose). This is a somewhat miscellaneous collection of material, and can be broadly broken down into the following categories:. Prints 1-30 Tibetan views relating to Bailey's period as Trade Agent at Chumbi and Gyantse. Although the album is dated 1909, it is clear that a number of prints date from an earlier period. In addition, prints 6-21 (and possibly others) are work of professional quality of a standard superior to Bailey's competent amateur photography. Prints 31-37 Views of the interior of the regimental mess of the 32nd Sikh Pioneers at Ambala, the work of an unidentified professional photographer. Print 32, apparently inserted at a later date, is by Johnston & Hoffmann and shows the visit of the Prince of Wales to Calcutta in 1905. Prints 38-46 Views at Mount Abu, the work of an unidentified professional photographer (?possibly Herzog & Higgins). Prints 47-48 Views at Mount Abu, probably by Bailey. Prints 49-82 Views taken during Bailey's European leave 1909-10, mainly views of Switzerland of poor quality. Prints 83-118 Views taken during Bailey's European leave 1909-10, views in Scotland of much higher quality than the preceding.
