Administrative / biographical background

The Rural District of Hemel Hempstead consisted of the civil parishes of Bovingdon, Flamstead, Flaunden, Great Gaddesden, Kings Langley (divided into Kings Langley and Chipperfield parishes in 1958) and Markyate. The parish of Hemel Hempstead also formed part of the Rural District until 1898 when the borough of Hemel Hempstead was created. From 1 April 1974, the Rural District became part of the new District of Dacorum.
