Description

Folio 206. Letter from Charles Wright, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mitford and Launditch Poor Law Union, to the Local Government Board, informing them that for many years Mrs Kirk of East Dereham had been employed as midwife for cases of childbirth at the workhouse at a charge of 2s 6d for each case, averaging out at approximately £2 per annum. Mrs Kirk relinquished the office at the end of March 1874 and since then these duties have carried out by Sarah Mitchell, Workhouse Nurse, assisted by Hannah Lawes the other nurse. At a recent meeting of the guardians a motion was put forward by William Foster, Chairman of the House Committee for each nurse to be paid an additional salary of £1 per annum for the extra services now carried out commencing from Mrs Kirk's retirement. He seeks the Board's approval.
Annotated: 'Sarah Mitchell appointed nurse January 1864, Salary £20. Hannah Laws appointed nurse March 1874, salary £20 and 1s per week for beer', 4 March 1875.
Annotated: 'I beg to advise the Board to sanction this proposal and to inform the Guardians; at the same time, that in cases of difficulty the Medical Officer should be sent for', H D Farnall. 6 March 1875.
Annotated: 'Assent and write as suggested'. 9 March 1875.
