Administrative / biographical background (Historical or biographical information about the creator of the record and the context of its creation)

Kiplin Hall was built by George Calvert, Secretary of State to King James I, in the early 1620s, to serve as a hunting lodge. Calvert was born at Kiplin, where his father leased land, and bought the estate in 1619. George Calvert was granted the title of first Baron of Baltimore in 1625 and founded the state of Maryland some five years later. He died two months before Charles I granted the founding charter (1632), leaving his sons to colonise Maryland.
In 1772 Charles, 5th Baron Baltimore, sold the Kiplin estate to his mother's second husband, Christopher Crowe for the sum of £7,000 and Crowe continued to add to the estate's property until it extended to over 5,000 acres. His son, Christopher Crowe the younger, became a noted farmer and agricultural experimenter.
The estate was inherited by Sarah Crowe, daughter of Robert Crowe, in 1818, shortly after her marriage to John Delaval Carpenter, 4th Earl of Tyrconnel. The couple died without surviving issue and bequeathed the estate to the Earl's first cousin twice removed, Admiral Walter Talbot, second son of the 18th Earl of Shrewbury. Talbot was required to change his name to Carpenter. His daughter, Sarah Marie Talbot married Christopher Turnor in 1907 and began the process of decreasing the estate and removing the Hall's contents to her new home. She conveyed equal ownership of the Kiplin Hall estate to her cousin, Bridget Talbot, in 1938, Bridget becoming sole owner after Sarah Turnor's death in 1957. Bridget Talbot established the Kiplin Charitable Trust in 1971, just before her death.
A number of pedigrees showing the descent of Kiplin Hall, the descent of the manors of Ellerton and Tunstall, the Wastell family and the Wright family have been compiled and are available at the Record Office; as are maps showing the growth and dispersal of the Kiplin estate, 1723-1930.
