Under the municipal Corporations Act of 1835 c.76 Section 50, the mayor, sheriff, aldermen and councillors, as well as justices of the peace, assessors and others had to sign a declaration of acceptance before exercising the functions of their office. This series is complete from 1835.
A few years previously in 1828 an oath or declaration that the holder of any office would not injure the Church of England was substituted for the Test and Corporations Acts, but the earliest of these books to survive dates from 1859.
Following the Local Government Act of 1933 a separate series was started relating to the oath of allegience and the judicial oath signed by each mayor, and a declaration signed by each sheriff. However, following the Justices Act of 1967, the mayor is no longer an ex officio Justice of the Peace, and since 1968 each mayor on election has merely subscribed to the declaration required by the Local Government Act of 1933
