The following records were deposited in Manchester Central Library as Diocesan Record Office in July 1982 by Rev. M. Holt.

Custodial history

The original church of St. John was consecrated on 16 August 1788. In 1863 it was in such a poor state of repair that the walls had to be propped up. From 1877 services were held in the school until a new church was built on the same site and consecrated on 21 June 1883.

A District was assigned to St. John's by Order in Council, 2 November 1842, (London Gazette, 3 January 1843), comprising Bacup Booth in the township of Newchurch and parish of Whalley and Higher Brandwood in the township of Spotland and parish of Rochdale.

The new church of Christ Church, Bacup, was given part of St. John's District, by Bishop's Instrument, 19 December 1854, and another part of the parish was transferred to the new District of St. Saviour's, Bacup, by Order in Council 3 February 1866 (London Gazette, 6 February).
