Public and Judicial Department Collections

Subject-based collections compiled by successive India Office departments concerned with 'Public and Judicial' matters i.e. Public and Judicial (1931-41), Political (1941-44), Political (British India) (1944-47), Political (General) (1946-47). The subjects covered are aliens, appeals, appointments, arms, broadcasting, cinematography, ecclesiastical, emigration, Europeans, evacuation, evidence, extradition, franchise, general, high courts and cases, jails and reformatories, law and order, legal, marriage and divorce, passports and visas, pilgrimage, propaganda, refugees, and territorial waters. The series was continued by the Commonwealth Relations Office Division B after the dissolution of the India Office in August 1947. Collection files opened after August 1947 are listed, but were transferred to the Library and Records Department of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1982.

The file series was continued by the Commonwealth Relations Office Division B for a few years after the dissolution of the India Office in August 1947. All the post-August 1947 files are at present in the custody of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
